1. There is, I think, no question that an extra

analyst is required for the two new ordinances as there will

be a great deal of extra work thrown on that Sub-department in

connection therewith and one officer will have practically to

be out all day. As to pay I agreed at the moment with the one

suggested in the Analyst's letter but on carefully considering

the matter I do not quite see why he should not be on present

scale of assistant analysts - viz £250 to £300, He would

require the travelling allowance suggested should have a house

allowance of $60 a month as the present assistant analyst ha

free quarters. If approved of full particulars of office wil

be sent you.

2. As we have no paid Chinese interpreters I do not

know what this will cost. Possibly Hon. Registrar General

Could say.

3. This has been a long felt want and has now become

a necessity which should be done at once.
